• Visual Arts (Grade 6)

    This introductory course is intended to involve all students at their own level in an interactive art studio. The students work with a variety of art media, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. The proper use of art tools and care of materials is explained and demonstrated. Art history, critical analysis, and the development of an art vocabulary are introduced at a basic level.

    This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Visual Arts.

  • Middle School Art Exploratory

    This course offers students the opportunity to explore basic arts techniques and theory in a variety of media. Students will develop their art skills, learn new studio habits, grow as artists, develop critical thinking skills, expand their creativity, and experiment with art-making using both 2D and 3D media. Students will learn about the nature of creativity, the elements of art, basic art history, art and technology, and art careers and community.

    This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Visual Arts.

  • General Music (Grade 6)

    The aim of this course is to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of music. Basic musical concepts are taught through hands-on activities and listening experiences. Students create their own compositions using technology and learn about timbre, pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm, form, dynamics, duration, and music notation.

    This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Music.

  • AP Art History

    AP Art History explores the nature of art, its uses, its meanings, art-making, and responses to art. Through investigation of diverse artistic traditions of cultures from prehistory to the present, the course fosters in-depth and holistic understanding of the history of art from a global perspective. Students will explore works of art in a 250-image set supplied by the College Board, as well as additional supplementary works, applying essential art historical skills of identification and categorization through visual, contextual, and comparative analysis.

    This course aligns with the College Board’s learning goals for AP Art History.

  • Visual Art & Design I

    This is an introductory course with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design. Drawing is stressed in the preparation for each project in this survey course. Composition, design, ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking techniques, as well as historical and contemporary art will be included.

    This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Visual Arts.

  • AP Music Theory

    In AP Music Theory, students develop their aural, sight-singing, written, compositional, and analytical skills through a series of listening, performance, written, creative, and analytical exercises. The course covers the mastery of the rudiments and terminology of music, with an emphasis on speed and fluency. The course then progresses to more sophisticated and creative tasks, including melodic and harmonic dictation; composition of a bass line for a given melody implying appropriate harmony; realization of a figured bass; realization of a Roman numeral progression; analysis of repertoire, including melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, and form; and sight-singing.
