Fine ArtsMiddle School (6–8)

This course is designed to stimulate the creativity and personal development of students by working in an interactive art studio. The students work with a variety of art media, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. The proper use of art tools and care of materials are explained and demonstrated. Art creation, art history, critical analysis, collaboration, and the development of an art vocabulary are introduced at a basic level.

This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Visual Arts.

Required

  • 8.5″ x 11″ or 9″ x 12″ sketchbook (100+ pages) or mixed media sketchbook
  • Pencils (not mechanical) and erasers
  • Pencil sharpener
  • 2 black permanent markers (1 broad and 1 fine-point)
  • Colored pencils
  • Ruler
  • Watercolor paints
  • Liquid acrylic or tempera paint (red, blue, yellow)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Washable markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Access to a smartphone camera or webcam
  • Ability to create videos and presentations
  • Plastic disposable container for water
  • Napkins or paper towels
  • Cardboard
  • Foam meat tray or foam plate
