Statewide LMS – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the Statewide LMS?
The Statewide Learning Management System (LMS) is a secure, fully supported digital platform provided at no cost to every Virginia public school division. The Statewide LMS has grown into one of the most advanced systems in the country, serving all Virginia public school divisions, students, and educators.
It enables reliable digital instruction and professional development while promoting local management. While VVA provides the platform, each division has its own independent instance. This means each school division maintains full control over their own LMS classrooms, curriculum, branding, user access, and policies.
Who provides the Statewide LMS?
The Statewide LMS is provided and maintained by Virtual Virginia (VVA). VVA provides every division’s LMS instance, ensuring consistent, high-quality support across the Commonwealth.
Why is the Statewide LMS essential for Virginia schools?
The LMS ensures that all school divisions, large or small, rural or urban, have access to a reliable digital learning infrastructure. VVA supports divisions that may not have the staff or resources to maintain their own LMS while promoting statewide uptime, continuity, and quality.
How many people can use the Statewide LMS?
The system is built to support up to 1.4 million total users every year, including all public school students, teachers, and instructional personnel.
What platform does the Statewide LMS use?
In 2025-2026, Virginia’s Statewide LMS is powered by Canvas, a widely used learning management system in K–12 and higher education. Canvas is also used by the Virginia Community College System and many Virginia colleges and universities.
Is there a cost to Virginia public school divisions?
No. Virtual Virginia provides and manages each division’s LMS instance at no cost. This includes system maintenance, technical support, upgrades, and integration assistance. The current Canvas K–12 LMS Bundle is again available to all public school divisions in 2025–2026 at no cost.

Can divisions create their own courses?
Yes. Each division has its own independent LMS instance where it can develop local courses, share instructional materials, and support teachers with division-created resources.
Does the Statewide LMS support professional development?
Absolutely. The platform is used extensively for educator training and professional learning by VVA, VDOE, school divisions, professional organizations, and statewide programs.
How does the Statewide LMS benefit school divisions with limited capacity?
VVA’s centralized support model relieves divisions of the technical and fiscal burden of maintaining their own LMS. This allows divisions to focus on instruction while benefiting from a high-quality, fully managed digital learning environment.
Where can divisions get help or learn more?
Support is available directly through Virtual Virginia’s LMS Support Team, along with guides, webinars, and help resources accessible within each division’s LMS instance.
