• AP English Language & Composition

    AP English Language & Composition is a writing-intensive course that focuses on creating civically engaged, critically thinking, reflective writers able to analyze and implement strong rhetoric. Students will read and analyze specific pieces of nonfiction and fiction from a variety of time periods and genres in context of their rhetorical strategies, including rhetorical appeals, organization, tone, diction, logical fallacies, counter-arguments, refutations, characterization, structure and organization, and literary devices. The course will focus on improving students’ persuasive writing skills, culminating in a formal, MLA-formatted research paper.

    This course aligns with the College Board’s learning goals for AP English Language & Composition.

  • English 12

    In English 12, students write informative, expository, and persuasive essays and produce a well-documented research paper. During the writing process, students demonstrate their understanding of grammatical conventions and practice techniques for improving their writing style and fluency. A survey of British literature helps students relate to the political, social, and philosophical perspectives of each historical period.

    This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for English 12.

  • English 11

    English 11 is designed to follow the development of American literature from its early beginnings to the contemporary era, including sermons, diaries, speeches, short stories, poetry, novels, and journalism. Students will write a research paper and other persuasive essays and will gain exposure to writing and rhetorical techniques grounded in primary sources and key pieces from select literary periods.

    This course aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for English 11.

  • English 10

    In English 10, students continue to build upon skills learned in earlier grades. There is a sustained emphasis on reading comprehension by comparing fiction and nonfiction texts. Students will analyze the cultural and social functions and universal themes of fictional texts from different cultures.

  • AP English Literature & Composition

    The AP English Literature & Composition course aligns to an introductory college-level literary analysis course. The course is designed to challenge a student’s ability to think critically, to analyze and evaluate literature and its literary devices, and to write analytical essays effectively. The course aims to refine and improve the student’s writing style, voice, grammar, mechanics, organization, and expression, culminating in a research paper focused on literary criticism using current MLA standards and electronic sources.

    This course aligns with the College Board’s learning goals for AP English Literature & Composition.

  • English 9

    English 9 covers multiple types of literature from around the world: novels, short stories, epic poetry, and drama. Student writing will encompass narrative, expository, and persuasive forms for a variety of purposes and audiences, and emphasis will be placed on expanding vocabulary and proper grammar.
