VVA Course Materials that May Contain Explicit Content
In compliance with Code of Virginia § 22.1-16.8, Virtual Virginia provides the following details about instructional materials in VVA courses that may be considered sexually explicit as defined in Code of Virginia § 2.2-2827. Instructional materials shall not be designated as sexually explicit based solely on the sexual orientation of the characters or individuals therein.
VVA Course Materials that May Contain Explicit Content
For Online Courses Taught by VVA Instructors
A VVA student’s parent/guardian may review the identified instructional material by sending a request via email to the student’s VVA instructor in the course.
Upon review, a parent/guardian may request that an alternative instructional resource be provided by sending an email to the student’s VVA instructor in the course at least 30 days in advance of the scheduled lesson date according to the course calendar. In some cases, an alternative resource may not be available (e.g., a required work by the College Board in an Advanced Placement course).
For VVA Outreach Program Resources Used by Local Schools & Teachers
As VVA Outreach Program content is fully editable, the local school and teacher(s) assume responsibility for any materials modified or added to VVA-released content. Virtual Virginia is not responsible for the final version of the course edited and delivered by a local teacher. Local teachers should follow their division policy regarding all content included in course instruction.
If a student’s parent/guardian makes a request to review identified instructional materials, local teachers may use the course instructor document under Files for the Outreach course specifying the pages with individual materials that may be considered sexually explicit. The local division policy should be followed to review and request alternative instructional materials.
