
Goal-Oriented Active Learning Series (GOALS)
The Goal-Oriented Active Learning Series (GOALS) provides high school students with supplemental online instruction in foundational skills and test preparation aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).
GOALS offers two programs: SOL Foundational Skills and SOL Test Preparation.
SOL Foundational Skills
SOL Foundational Skills
In the SOL Foundational Skills program, students will have access to asynchronous content and synchronous instruction in the following core SOL courses:
- Algebra I
- Biology I
- Earth Science I
- English 11
- Geometry
- Virginia & U.S. History
Asynchronous Content
All students enrolled in the SOL Foundational Skills program will have access to SOL-aligned subject-area content within Virtual Virginia’s Canvas learning management system (LMS). Schools will be able to access their enrolled students’ attendance and performance information within the LMS.
Synchronous Instruction
Synchronous instruction sessions are provided by Virginia-certified VVA instructors during the school day (between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.). Each session lasts 45–60 minutes. Sessions will be provided four to five times per week per course.
Students enrolled in the SOL Foundational Skills program may participate in one of two synchronous instruction options.
Option 1: VVA-Scheduled Small Group Support
- Sessions are scheduled by VVA.
- VVA selects the instructional topics.
- 1–7 students per session
- 4–5 sessions per week per course
- Cost to division: $30 per student per session
Option 2: School-Selected Group Support
- The local school selects the dates and times for sessions.
- The local school selects each session topic from a list of 10 topics pre-selected by VVA for each course.
- 8–14 students per session
- 4–5 sessions per week per course
- Cost to division: $250 per group session
SOL Test Prep
SOL Test Prep
In the SOL Test Prep program, students will have access to asynchronous content and synchronous instruction to help them prepare for SOL assessments in the following courses:
- Algebra I
- Algebra II
- Biology I
- Earth Science I
- English 11
- Geometry
- Virginia & U.S. History

Registration Instructions
GOALS Registration Instructions
Before you can enroll a student in GOALS, that student must have an account in Genius. To add a student in Genius, follow the instructions for “How to create a student in Genius” on this page.
Once a student’s account in Genius has been created, follow the steps below to enroll the student in GOALS sessions.
For VVA-Scheduled GOALS Sessions
Before requesting a VVA-Scheduled GOALS session, review the current VVA-Scheduled GOALS Session Schedule (via Google Docs).
- Using your counselor/division coordinator ID and password, log in to Genius. If you can’t remember your password, click the “forgot password” link.
- Click the Students tab at the top of the page.
- Click the name of the student who will be enrolled in GOALS.
- In the lefthand menu, click Enroll in GOALS.
- Use the dropdown menus to select the GOALS session for the student.
- Select the date of the session. Note that the date selected must be at least 72 hours (including weekends) after the time of GOALS enrollment.
- Select the course (for example, GOALS Algebra I Foundations).
- Select the topic (for example, Skill 1 Integer Operations).
- Select the section, which refers to the specific time slot of the session.
- Click the Enroll button.
For School-Selected GOALS Sessions
Before requesting a School-Selected GOALS session, review the current School-Selected GOALS Session Schedule (via Google Docs).
For school-selected sessions, the counselor/division coordinator must first request a GOALS section. Follow the steps below to request the session and then enroll students following section approval.
- Using your counselor/division coordinator ID and password, log in to Genius. If you can’t remember your password, click the “forgot password” link.
- Click the Affiliations tab at the top of the page.
- Click the name of the school for which you are requesting a GOALS section.
- In the lefthand menu, click Request GOALS Section.
- Use the dropdown menus and fields to request the GOALS section you wish to create.
- Enter a name for the section you are requesting.
- Select the course (for example, GOALS Algebra I Foundations) for the section you are requesting.
- Select the date and time for the section you are requesting. Note that the date/time requested must be at least 72 hours after the request is submitted.
- Select the topic for the section you are requesting.
- Click the Save button to submit your request.
- After submitting your request, Virtual Virginia will review the request. If necessary, VVA will follow up with you regarding the requested date/time. Otherwise, if the requested session is approved, then you may enroll each student by following the steps below in Genius.
- Click the Students tab at the top of the page.
- Click the name of the student who will be enrolled in GOALS.
- In the lefthand menu, click Enroll in GOALS.
- Use the dropdown menus to select the GOALS session for the student.
- Select the date of the session. Note that the date selected must be at least 72 hours (including weekends) after the time of GOALS enrollment.
- Select the course (for example, GOALS Algebra I Foundations).
