Goal-Oriented Active Learning Series (GOALS)

Daytime Supplemental SOL Instruction

The Goal-Oriented Active Learning Series (GOALS) provides Virginia public school students in grades 3–12 with supplemental online instruction in foundational skills and test preparation aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

GOALS offers two programs: SOL Foundational Skills and SOL Test Preparation.

Supplemental instruction is provided during daytime school hours. GOALS is available to all Virginia public school students. Prior or current enrollment in a VVA course is not required.

GOALS instruction for 2022–2023 has concluded. Stay tuned for news about GOALS registration for 2023–2024!

In the SOL Test Prep program, students will have access to asynchronous content and synchronous instruction to help them prepare for SOL assessments in the following courses:

Asynchronous Content

All students enrolled in the SOL Test Prep program will have access to SOL-aligned subject-area content within Virtual Virginia’s Canvas LMS. Schools will be able to access their enrolled students’ attendance and performance information within the LMS.

Synchronous Instruction

Synchronous instruction sessions are provided by Virginia-certified VVA instructors at designated times during the school day. Each session lasts 45 minutes.

  • Sessions are scheduled by VVA.
  • VVA selects the instructional topics.
  • Unlimited number of students per session
  • 1 session per week per course
  • Cost to division: $30 per student per course

In the SOL Foundational Skills program, students have access to asynchronous content and synchronous instruction in the following core SOL courses:

  • Geometry: Thursdays, 1:30 p.m.
  • Math 3: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.
  • Math 4: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.
  • Math 5: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.
  • Math 6: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.
  • Math 7: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.
  • Math 8: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.

Registration Instructions

GOALS Registration Instructions

Before you can enroll a student in GOALS, that student must have an account in the Genius SIS. To add a student in Genius, follow these instructions.

Once a student’s account in Genius has been created, follow the steps below to enroll the student in GOALS sessions.

  1. Using your counselor/division coordinator ID and password, log in to Genius. If you can’t remember your password, click the “forgot password” link.
  2. Click the Students tab at the top of the page.
  3. Click the name of the student who will be enrolled.
  4. In the lefthand menu, click Enroll in a Section.
  5. Under “Type,” use the dropdown menu to select the term for the student (for example, Spring 2023 Foundational Skills).
  6. Choose a course, mentor, and start date.
  7. Click the checkbox to agree to the terms.
  8. Click the Enroll button.
